Chapter 50: TWIST OF FATE
YUHYUN is hugging me.
Well, to be precise, Yun Yuhyun was only hugging Wonyoung’s leg.
He’d be honest— that much physical contact with his son made his skin crawl. But not as bad as before.
I shouldn’t be feeling this way towards my baby.
Wonyoung wanted to hug Yun Yuhyun back, but his body wouldn’t move no matter how much his brain yelled.
Come on, move!
"Thank you, Papa."
Aww.
Wonyoung’s heart melted when he heard Yun Yuhyun’s little, shy ’thank you.’
Why can’t I hug my own son?
"Aren’t you lucky, Yuhyun-ah?" Yun Dujun said, picking up Yun Yuhyun and carrying him in his arms. "Your papa really cares about you, even if he doesn’t show it often."
Aigoo.
Does Sunbae-nim have to put it that way?
"Isn’t that right, Hoobae-nim?"
Wonyoung was flustered when both Yun Dujun and Yun Yuhyun suddenly looked at him.
Aigoo.
They’re really like two peas in a pod.
"I don’t hate you, Yuhyun-ah."
That was the best way Wonyoung could express his feelings.
Yes, he knew that it still sucked.
So, I won’t blame Yuhyun if he doesn’t believe me.
"I don’t hate Papa either."
Oh?
"I don’t hate Papa," Yun Yuhyun repeated shyly, and then he buried his face against the side of Yun Dujun’s neck. "We can be friends, Papa."
Aww.
Wonyoung was touched upon hearing that.
"It’s great, isn’t it? Hoobae-nim," Yun Dujun said, gently putting his hand on the small of Wonyoung’s back as if encouraging him. "Our son wants to be friends with you."
Right, it was a miracle that Yun Yuhyun felt that way now.
That made Wonyoung smile.
Yes, it’s not too late to fix my relationship with my son.
"I want to be friends with you, too, Yuhyun-ah," Wonyoung said, gently patting Yun Yuhyun’s back. This time, he didn’t feel his skin crawl. "Thank you for giving me a chance to be your friend."
***
ON THEIR way back to Seoul, their family used Yun Dujun’s fancy custom-made SUV.
This feels more like a private jet than a car.
Wonyoung would know since he had been inside Yun Dujun’s private plane several times in the past.
The interior of the Alpha’s SUV was just as luxurious as his private jet.
There was a four-seat arrangement with two seats across from each other inside the SUV. Each seat was as big and as comfortable as the first-class seats on a plane.
In fact, the seats looked like beds now after An Baekya and Yun Yuhyun reclined them.
Yes, the two kids were already asleep.
They even had blankets covering their little bodies.
To be honest, Wonyoung was also feeling sleepy now.
The ambiance in the car was cozy, thanks to the enchanting glow of ambient lightning, creating a serene atmosphere inside the car. The state-of-the-art technology that transformed the SUV into a tiny home was impressive.
I’ll order a custom-made van like this once I succeed here as an actor.
"Hoobae-nim, are you sleepy?"
"A little, Sunbae-nim," Wonyoung admitted. "Your car is so comfy."
"Do you want it?"
"If I say ’yes,’ are you going to give it to me?"
"No."
Oh.
Wonyoung suddenly felt embarrassed.
I got ahead of myself.
"The reporters already know that this SUV is mine, so I can’t give this one to you. They might follow you around, thinking it’s me," Yun Dujun explained, restoring Wonyoung’s pride. "So, I’ll get you a new one. Just tell me what car model and what kind of interior you want, and I’ll order it for you. You have to wait, though. It takes a while for custom-made cars to come in."
"Are you serious, Sunbae-nim?"
"Do I look like I’m kidding?"
"No, you never joked about giving me expensive gifts," Wonyoung said, pausing for a moment. "I won’t turn it down if you want to give me a custom-made car, Sunbae-nim. After all, what’s the point of marrying a rich man like you if I don’t enjoy the luxuries that you offer me? I risked my life to give you a child, so I deserve this much."
"Yes, of course."
"But..."
"But what?"
"Only give me the custom-made car when I deserve it. Like when I land a significant role in a major drama."
"Alright, let’s do that."
"Thank you, Sunbae-nim."
"Are you going back to your apartment in the meantime?"
"Yes, Sunbae-nim," Wonyoung said while nodding. "You need time before we can move into your house, right?"
Yun Dujun nodded. "I need to get my father’s permission first. As you know, my father and older brother don’t like me. Grandfather bought me a house near Abeoji’s house in hopes of repairing our relationship. But I never used the house because I know my father and older brother won’t like it."
"Does your older brother still live with your father?"
"Yeah. My father’s house is like an apartment complex with several buildings. So, my older brother and his family still have their own space."
"I’m sorry, Sunbae-nim. Because of me, we have to move there..."
"It’s okay, Hoobae-nim. Don’t apologize. Like I said, living there will keep you safe from my mother."
"Okay, I’ll try not to feel guilty about it."
Yun Dujun covered his mouth, but Wonyoung heard it— the Alpha let out a chuckle.
"Are you laughing at me, Sunbae-nim?"
"You’re cute, Hoobae-nim."
"I know. That’s why it’s a shame that my genes didn’t even fight when we conceived our Yuhyun. Our son is handsome, but it would have been nice if he were just cute at his age."
This time, Yun Dujun wasn’t able to control his laughter.
"Sunbae-nim, I’m serious."
Yun Yuhyun was a mini-version of Yun Dujun.
My son looks like the chibi version of his Alpha dad.
So, the word ’cute’ didn’t really suit Yun Yuhyun.
It doesn’t help that my baby is either stoic or grumpy.
"Hoobae-nim, you’ve changed for the better."
"You mean, I’m funnier now, right?"
Yun Dujun smiled and gently patted Wonyoung’s head. "I can’t wait to live with you, Hoobae-nim."
Aigoo.
Wonyoung couldn’t help but joke again. "I’ll do my best to entertain you once we’re cohabitating, Sunbae-nim."
***
HOME SWEET HOME.
It had only been a few days, but Wonyoung felt like he had left his apartment longer than that.
"You have a nice place, Appa."
"Right?" Wonyoung agreed with An Baekya’s assessment. "I bought a two-bedroom apartment because I was anticipating your arrival, Baekya. Too bad we won’t be staying here for long."
"What are you going to do about this apartment later, Appa?" An Baekya asked curiously. "You can’t break the lease, can you? I know you’re not worried about your finances. Still, I feel like it’s a waste to continue paying rent when we’re not staying here."
Right?
Even though the rent won’t make me bankrupt, it’s still a waste.
Hence...
"Don’t worry, Baekya— I won’t let this apartment go to waste," Wonyoung said, smiling at the child. "Can I introduce my cousin to you?"
***
"OPPA, this is information overload!"
Pfft.
Wonyoung laughed softly at Bae Gayoung, his younger cousin.
He called her over to introduce An Baekya.
Of course, the poor girl was shocked to know that he had become a foster parent to a child the same age as his biological son.
"Oppa, I told you to go to the hospital," Bae Gayoung said, glancing at An Baekya— who was drinking a banana milk— nervously before looking at Wonyoung again. "Why did you go and foster a child instead of taking care of yourself first?"
An Baekya looked at Wonyoung worriedly. "Appa, are you sick?"
Bae Gayoung gasped after hearing An Baekya address Wonyoung as ’Appa.’
"No, I’m not sick," Wonyoung answered An Baekya’s question while shaking his head. "Baekya, you can watch TV in the living room or rest in your room. I’ll just talk to your Aunt Gayoung."
"Okay, Appa," An Baekya said before jumping from his seat (because the seat was too high for him). Then the child bowed to Bae Gayoung politely. "See you later, Aunt Gayoung."
Bae Gayoung could only nod awkwardly.
After An Baekya politely excused himself, the child left the dining hall.
Now, only Wonyoung and Bae Gayoung were left there— sitting across from each other while enjoying their iced coffee.
"Oppa, does Dujun-ssi know that you’re fostering a child?"
"Of course. Dujun Sunbae-nim is the reason why I was able to become a foster parent this fast. Actually, legally speaking, both Sunbae-nim and I are An Baekya’s foster parents."
Bae Gayoung’s eyes widened in shock. "Really? But why would the two of you foster a child when you already have a son together?"
"Sunbae-nim and I just feel bad for An Baekya. We needed to be his foster parents to take him away from his abusive guardians," Wonyoung explained vaguely. Of course, he got An Baekya’s permission to share his life story with Bae Gayoung earlier. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have shared it with his cousin. "Anyway, An Baekya and I will be living with Dujun Sunbae-nim and Yuhyun soon."
"Oppa, are you sure you know what you’re doing?"
"Yes, I do. Don’t worry too much."
Bae Gayoung let out a sigh while shaking her head. "Fine, I won’t question your decision anymore. And don’t worry, I’ll keep this a secret. Do I need to sign another NDA?"
Oh, right.
Gayoung and her parents signed an NDA when I married Dujun Sunbae-nim.
Of course, his greedy relatives demanded a huge sum of money before signing the NDA.
Dujun Sunbae-nim wasn’t a celebrity yet when it happened. I wondered if my aunt and uncle bothered Sunbae-nim when he became a famous actor? Or maybe it didn’t happen because Sunbae-nim set them up and sent them to prison after my accident.
"Oppa?"
"No, you don’t need to sign another NDA," Wonyoung said after spacing out for a moment. "I know you won’t blabber about An Baekya to other people. Gayoung-ah, I trust you."
"Don’t trust me too much, Oppa."
He just laughed it off.
"Gayoung-ah, I’m leaving this apartment to you once An Baekya and I move out."
"What?"
"I’m going to continue paying for the rent and the utilities, so don’t worry about it. I’ll also send you money for your allowance and groceries."
"Oppa, this is too sudden," Bae Gayoung said worriedly. "Plus, your place is a bit far from my university and workplace."
"I’ll buy you a car, then. A domestic, average car should be fine, right? I can buy you a foreign car, but you might get unwanted attention from your peers."
"Yeah, and I’ll be too nervous to drive a luxury car anyway..." Bae Gayoung trailed off, and then she sighed. "Is it really alright, Oppa? Your offer is pretty tempting. I actually want to move out of my place because I have a creepy neighbor. He keeps looking at me weirdly."
"Gayoung-ah, pack your things and move in this weekend," Wonyoung said, and then he furrowed his brows. "Do you need me to confront your neighbor?"
"No need, Oppa."
"If you feel unsafe there, move in now. I’ll help you pack your things."
"Oh, I’m fine, Oppa. My boyfriend visits every night, so my neighbor won’t think that I live alone."
"You have a boyfriend?!"
"Is it that shocking, Oppa?"
"But you’re just a kid..."
"Oppa, I’m in my early twenties now," Bae Gayoung said, laughing. "Anyway, I’ll treat An Baekya as my nephew... wait, Oppa. You said An Baekya is abused by his guardians, right? And that his mother’s life insurance was stolen by his relatives."
"Yes. What about it?"
"Do you remember the novel that I’m proofreading? The one I said you might like."
"Oh, yeah. Why?"
"I just remembered that the main character’s name is An Baekya— a child actor who’s being exploited by his relative," Bae Gayoung said, tilting her head to one side. "What a coincidence, huh?"
Wonyoung’s eyes widened in shock, suddenly feeling a shiver down his spine.
Is it really just a coincidence?
"Gayoung-ah, can you tell me the title of that novel?"
"It’s an English title," Bae Gayoung said. "It’s called ’Unchained.’"
Oh.
Wonyoung furrowed his brows.
It’s not ’Chained to You,’ but doesn’t ’Unchained’ sound like the former’s opposite?
