Chapter 67: Chapter 67
"You have the audacity, don’t you? I don’t care if you’re the male lead or not... I won’t let you leave this house until you’re beaten to death. Who the heck do you think you are to come into my house after abandoning me and my kids for eight years... talking to me like nothing ever happened, huh?"
Lin Xu shouted, her voice loud enough for Mo Ying and Fuhan to hear from inside.
The both of them gave each other just one glance and immediately ran towards the door corner to peek, though they could hardly hear what they were saying.
Meanwhile, Mo Dan sat there in surprise, not expecting Lin Xu’s words at all.
She now seemed so much different; rather than the meek and quiet girl she was before, she was more fierce and more scary if he could say.
"Lin Xu... Is everything alright with you? What do you exactly mean by all that?" Mo Ying seemed confused.
Lin Xu scoffed in utter annoyance, "What do I mean? Don’t act stupid, Mo Dan. You disappeared for eight years without a single word. And now you show up, smiling like some hero returning home? I don’t hate you personally, but you’re a huge scumbag... an utter scumbag."
She shouted again, and this time Mo Dan stood up, his face in a slight frown.
"It seems like you have forgotten the deal we made because I don’t understand why you are uttering such things all of a sudden." He muttered, his words leaving Lin Xu confused.
"Deal? What deal are you talking about?"
"You must have really forgotten, huh?" Mo Dan took his seat once again as he faced Lin Xu with a very serious expression.
"Lin Xu, have you forgotten that you and I are not actually, legally married?"
Lin Xu froze.
Her lips parted slightly, but no words came out. "W-what did you just say?" she finally managed to stutter.
Mo Dan leaned back, his gaze calm but piercing. "You heard me. You and I were never legally married. There was no real ceremony; everything was all fake."
Lin Xu blinked rapidly, her anger fading into shock. "That’s not true. Stop talking nonsense!"
He tilted his head slightly as his brows furrowed deeply.
Lin Xu was taken aback; she never remembered there being a deal between the male lead and his dead wife, so what was with all this?
What deal was he actually talking about?
"What deal are you talking about, exactly?"
He looked straight into her eyes, his voice low. "It happened eight years ago, Lin Xu... you ran away from your home when you found out that your parents were planning on getting you married for money, only to run into a man who you ended up sleeping with. You said you couldn’t remember him. When you returned home, some weeks later you realized you were pregnant. You didn’t want your parents to know. Knowing who they were, you were sure they would have sold you and your babies, so you came to me for help."
He explained, "I decided to pay your bride price and marry you, but it was all an act so your parents would leave you alone and you would have a roof over your head and be able to give birth without being looked down upon. I had things I had to do, so I left, but I never abandoned you or the kids because you were never my wife in the first place."
"And the kids, they were never my children... their real father is probably still out there, and you never found out who he was, you never even wanted to." Mo Dan explained, his entire words leaving Lin Xu speechless.
Why the heck didn’t she remember all this? How the hell did the plot change so drastically? Was this what Susu had meant earlier?
"So you’re telling me that my kids’ real father isn’t you and he’s out there?"
Facing Mo Dan, she asked, "If it was a deal, then what exactly did you gain from it? Why suddenly help someone for no reason?"
Smiling, he stretched a little before standing up. "My family wouldn’t shut up about me getting married, so marrying you was a way of escaping being married off for real. Anyway, I have to get going now, Lin Xu... it was truly nice meeting you again."
Lin Xu stood up and nodded slightly, although she was still shaken by her sudden discovery.
"I saw a young man earlier, I also found out you got married recently... I’m happy that you finally found your happiness, and the kids, they have also grown up quite well. Take good care of yourself."
Saying that, he smiled and turned around to leave, and seeing that, Lin Xu shouted, "Thanks a lot, Mo Dan... Lin Xu thanks you for all you did for her!"
And with that, he left as the courtyard immediately got silent, Lin Xu’s serious face returning almost immediately.
"Susu!" She summoned.
[ Yes, Host! ]
Folding her hands, Lin Xu frowned. "Why wasn’t I aware that the kids weren’t the male lead’s?"
[ Well, Host. You never asked, hahahah! ]
Susu teased as Lin Xu rolled her eyes.
"You said I can reveal the identity of certain characters, right?"
[ Of course, Host. You can reveal the identity of certain characters, but it comes with a price. ]
Lin Xu crossed her arms. "Fine then, I want to know who the real father of the triplets is."
There was a short silence before Susu’s voice came back, a little too cheerful.
[ That information will cost you... 50 Thousand taels. ]
Lin Xu’s eyes widened. "Fifty thousand taels?!" she almost screamed. "Why is it that expensive?!"
[ Because, Host, you’re not asking for gossip, you’re asking for an S-class secret. Knowing this could completely change the story’s direction. ]
Lin Xu’s jaw dropped. "what? I just want to know who my kids’ father is, not open heaven’s gate!"
[ Unfortunately, that’s the rule. The more important the truth, the higher the cost. ]
Lin Xu groaned, rubbing her forehead. "Do I look like someone with ten thousand taels just lying around? I don’t even have enough to fix the broken door, Susu!"
[ Hehe... then the Host can always pay another way. ]
Her eyes narrowed. "Another way? What way?"
[ Through missions, of course. Complete one special task for the system, and I’ll give you the answer for free. ]
Lin Xu blinked, suspicious. "Special task? What special task are we talking about here?"
