Chapter 457 Miss, You’ve Been Poisoned

The conversations of those people on the city wall were naturally heard by Mengyu, but she wasn’t afraid. How could she, a Foundation Establishment Cultivator, be afraid of a Mortal?

Although she wasn’t afraid, it was still good to be prepared, so she cast a defensive shield on herself.

Mengyu followed Old Man Tu, who carried a bundle on his back, through increasingly remote paths, yet he never looked back. It seemed he didn’t care at all whether Mengyu was following him or not.

It wasn’t until they entered a secluded alley that Old Man Tu finally turned to glance at Mengyu: "You really did follow."

Mengyu smiled faintly: "Old Man Tu, wasn’t it you who asked me to come?"

Hearing Mengyu call him by his name sent a shock through Old Man Tu’s heart, and he looked at her intently: "You won’t regret it then." Saying this, he knocked on a somewhat shabby wooden door.

"Knock knock knock, knock, knock."

Mengyu noticed there was something elaborate about the way Old Man Tu knocked: three quick knocks followed by two separate, lighter knocks.

After knocking, Old Man Tu didn’t continue but instead stood to the side.

Mengyu simply thought this was some sort of secret signal and didn’t give it much thought.

The door opened, however, before Mengyu could step forward, an arrow shot out from inside.

Mengyu was certain that if she hadn’t been prepared, if she were a Mortal, she would have had great difficulty dodging the arrow.

She raised her hand and caught the arrow, but then another one shot out, which she again caught. A third arrow was let loose, and once again caught by Mengyu.

She looked towards Old Man Tu: "Are you trying to rob and kill me?"

She had noticed just now that the moment the door opened, Old Man Tu suddenly dodged to the side, exposing her to danger.

Old Man Tu shook his head: "No, this is just a precaution. Didn’t you notice the arrows were aimed at non-vital spots?"

Mengyu reflected on where the arrows had been aimed: the first at her forearm, the next two at her thighs.

Mengyu said angrily: "Even if they’re not aimed to kill, I could still have been seriously injured. Besides, if an arrow struck an artery, I could die all the same!"

Old Man Tu shook his head: "That won’t happen! I have golden sore medicine at home that can quickly stop the bleeding. We’re only taking precautions, not intending to kill."

Mengyu let out a sigh: "You’re not being sincere. Forget it, I’m not buying." With that said, she turned to leave. She had no intention of returning the arrows she had caught but kept them in her hand.

Yet, having only taken a few steps, she heard Old Man Tu’s voice from behind: "Miss, you have been poisoned."

Mengyu looked down at the arrow in her hand, only to notice that the arrowhead was glowing blue—these were poison-tipped arrows!

Old Man Tu watched her intently: "You’ve been poisoned, and only my unique Antidote can cure it."

"Could such a minor poison affect me?" Mengyu turned to face Old Man Tu: "I’m just an antique broker, you asked me to follow you, I complied, and yet you poison me? Old Man Tu, what are you really after?"

Old Man Tu saw not a trace of poisoning on Mengyu’s face, and his shock deepened.

In the world, when seeing a lone child, a woman, or a Monk, one must be on guard. And this lady was a woman wandering alone.

Moreover, there are two other types of people one should not provoke: men with bowed heads and women with raised heads.

And this lady had walked all this way with him; to say she walked with head held high would be no exaggeration.

The girl before him was both among those to be guarded against and also belonged to the group not to be provoked—how could he not be cautious?
