Chapter 143: Chapter 143(Luxury Car Extra Chapter)
The video on the computer beside Ethan played on an endless loop, a forgotten colleague slumped asleep across the desk, overtaken by exhaustion.
A familiar, lighthearted tune filtered softly from the speakers.
"Cigarette~ It’s such a cold day, I want to smoke an electronic cigarette, but Rick doesn’t have electricity~"
Ethan’s lips twitched at the irony of the song’s line and the simple repetition of the office’s favorite fan remix.
They had dubbed it "the second creation" of a classic tune — a melody etched into every cubicle during late-night overtime.
Normally, Ethan might have found comfort in its familiar rhythm, but now it only deepened the restless disquiet stirred within him.
His watch flickered—2:30 AM.
He grimaced and snapped his palm sharply.
The loud crack startled his comrade awake, who adjusted his glasses warily.
"Holy crap, why the hell are you slapping yourself awake?" the sleepy man groaned.
"I thought the supervisor was around," the sleepy man grumbled.
The man shook his head and settled back down, murmuring into the dim room, "Man, this overtime is killing me. I’m quitting next month for sure — no more of this!"
But Ethan paid no mind.
His thoughts swirled— Azure Origin Dao Sect... was none of it real? Was this... a dream?
Impossible, he thought, bitterness squeezing his mind.
His phone vibrated suddenly.
He slid away from the desk, stepping into a nearby bathroom to answer in private.
The number was familiar—a name long carved into his heart.
His ex-girlfriend.
She, whom he had loved ten years—only to have her run away half a year prior, chasing wealth and abandoning their vows.
"Hello," Ethan answered, voice taut.
"Ethan, let’s get back together."
Soft and wistful, her words weighed heavily in the humid air.
"What do you mean?"
"Lets get married next year, have children after that year. A steady life with only the two of us."
He laughed bitterly. "Only half a year’s gone by, and you’re already tired of your new life? Now you come back to me for a fallback?"
"No, Ethan, listen..."
"Wait—what did you just call me?"
"Ethan, isn’t that your name?"
His mind reeled.
Clarity came in a flash—he was no longer the man they believed him to be.
His true life, the memories, his very identity—it had shifted.
In his previous life his name was not ’Ethan’.
Anyone who knew ’Ethan’ was rooted in the Six Continents World.
This world was... fictional.. a illusion.
Powerless to wield his cultivation, Ethan saw only one way to shatter this illusion.
If death was the key to freedom, then so be it.
High above the neon-lit city streets, Ethan leapt from the rooftop.
Wind shrieked past him, an orchestra of roaring chaos.
His name—Ethan—burned cold on his tongue, but it was not his original self.
The truth lay buried deeper.
Growing closer to the earth, he activated his spiritual power with a fierce cry.
"Heaven-piercing Mind Eye, open!"
His pupils gleamed azure, storming with mental energy.
Suddenly, the bustling traffic below froze, neon lights flickered and died, and the world lurched violently.
The fabric of illusions shattered like glass.
Gravity and motion blurred, the world spinning wildly.
When his vision cleared—
He found himself in a cavern.
Before him stood a sturdy stone table, atop which rested a chessboard.
Turning, he beheld a door—ironbound and simple.
Beyond it was the cave where he had unsealed the phoenix egg.
The two caves were separated only by a thin wall and a single door.
Memories flooded his mind:
After taking the phoenix egg from the skeleton, he had already crossed into this fantastical plane.
"The Heaven-piercing Mind Eye didn’t detect this illusion before. Interesting..." he murmured, eyebrows drawing together in concentration.
Touching his chest, he confirmed a steady heartbeat, reassuring and real.
Opening the spatial ring, he confirmed the phoenix egg was safe and whole.
A breath of relief escaped him.
"Finally, I have truly won this battle."
A yet-familiar voice echoed through the space.
Before him, two figures emerged from the mist.
The first was robed entirely in white, calm and serene.
The second was cloaked in black, enigmatic, a mask hiding his face, exuding casual contempt as he lounged, one foot on the ground, the other resting lazily on a stone bench, arms crossed.
"Alicia, are you there?" Ethan sent his voice into the mental expanse.
"I’m here, Sir," came the reassuring response.
With Alicia’s voice as his anchor, Ethan’s lingering fear began to dissolve.
"This illusion was almost too real," he confided silently.
His eyes fixed on the pair before him. "Who... are you?"
The man in white smiled gently, not aged in appearance but bearing the voice of time itself, deep and rich.
"I am but a stubborn old soul, faded with the passage of millennia. My strength wanes, my time here limited. I am the founder, awaiting the destined one to carry my legacy forward."
Ethan’s breath caught. "The founding ancestor of the Azure Origin Dao Sect?"
"Indeed," the figure replied with a faint laugh.
"Sometimes I forget how distant those days feel now. Tell me—how are things now? Has the sect prospered or declined?"
Ethan hesitated, then answered truthfully. "Apart from an uncertain future, all remains stable."
"Good enough. To have maintained the sect so long without relying solely on my inheritance... the sect has shown some strength." The white-robed man gave him a proud smile.
Ethan’s eyes searched the ancient figure’s face.
"What is your true name?"
"The Blue Void Ancestor, But my real name is.... Ebon Azure." The name carried weight beyond words.
Ebon Azure’s eyes swept over Ethan in quiet appraisal.
"You... are pure physical cultivation? Truly extraordinary to reach the Divine Fire Realm in this era. Do you possess a complete physical cultivation technique?"
Ethan bowed his head modestly. "Mostly luck."
"Luck," Ebon Azure chuckled softly, "is but a part of strength—do not dismiss it."
"Enough talk," he said, voice resolute. "Having passed the trial, you shall receive my inheritance."
