Chapter 629: Chapter 629: A Special Assignment
Guan Yue said: “Honey, I’m on the phone with Yufei! Oh my gosh! Do you know? Yufei got a boyfriend, such a big deal, she’s been hiding it from us all along!”
Li Yufei furrowed her brows; it must have been Du Shaoheng suddenly entering the room and overhearing her conversation with Guan Yue.
Moments later, she heard Du Shaoheng’s voice, coming closer: “What did you say? Yufei got a boyfriend?”
“Yeah!” Guan Yue laughed cheerfully, “You’re surprised, too, aren’t you!? You’re not the only one surprised! I’m surprised too!”
Li Yufei didn’t expect Du Shaoheng to accidentally bump into their conversation.
She raised her brow, finding herself in a difficult situation.
A few seconds later, Du Shaoheng took Guan Yue’s phone: “Hello? Yufei.”
Li Yufei: “Hmm?”
Du Shaoheng: “I heard Yueyue said you… have a boyfriend?”
Li Yufei chuckled: “Yeah. It’s currently… just entered a stable phase, so I didn’t plan to make it public. But Yueyue has always been worried about my life’s big decisions, so I couldn’t help but tell her to put her mind at ease.”
If it were before, she would certainly have felt annoyed by Guan Yue’s nosy attitude, but now, considering Du Shaoheng’s face, she didn’t mind.
Du Shaoheng said: “Who is he? Have I met him?”
Li Yufei said: “Um… you don’t know him.”
She had invented this “imaginary boyfriend,” but now that Du Shaoheng insisted on knowing clearly, she was really stuck on how to continue the lie.
Du Shaoheng: “How old is he?”
Li Yufei said: “A little younger than me!”
Du Shaoheng said: “If there’s a chance, next time there’s an event, bring him along. I’d like to see him, for peace of mind.”
Given that Li Yufei had previously faced a disappointing relationship and had a failed marriage, Du Shaoheng wasn’t confident in Li Yufei’s judgment of men.
Li Yufei said: “Why are you so worried?”
Du Shaoheng said: “I’m afraid you’d meet a man like Li Cheng again.”
Li Yufei: “Do I look that easy to fool?”
Du Shaoheng: “Yufei, just let me screen them for you. You don’t understand men, but I do. If the person’s character is good enough, I’ll be at ease!”
He seemed genuinely concerned that she might meet a bad man again.
From Du Shaoheng’s perspective, with Li Yufei’s background in the expansive city of Beijing, men who would match her are very few.
Li Yufei was too outstanding; precisely because she’s too outstanding, finding a man who’s a good match in both background and in her heart is incredibly difficult.
In this society, men generally are chauvinistic and can’t stand women being more accomplished than they are.
Moreover, those who want to mooch off others are also prevalent.
Du Shaoheng didn’t want Li Yufei to suffer.
Li Yufei said: “Shaoheng, don’t worry! He’s a very good man… at least, I think he’s very good. You don’t have to worry too much about my life’s major events, I’ll take care of myself!”
Du Shaoheng: “Isn’t next Friday Xixi’s birthday? Are you bringing Junjun to attend?”
Li Yufei: “I won’t miss it. Junjun won’t miss it either.”
Du Shaoheng: “Then… bring ‘him’ along as well!”
Li Yufei was taken aback, politely declining: “No need to bring ‘him’ along, right!”
Du Shaoheng said: “We’ll meet sooner or later. Seeing him once will give me peace of mind.”
Li Yufei raised her brow, feeling it was a bit of a headache!
Originally, she just made up something to appease Guan Yue, but unexpectedly stumbled into Du Shaoheng, leaving her no choice…
She had to agree: “I understand. If he’s free, I’ll bring him along!”
Hung up the phone.
Li Yufei snuffed out the cigarette, lay down on the bed, and stared at the empty ceiling.
This is a problem now.
She needs an “actor.”
…
Two days later.
Rong Ling had just changed into his uniform, ready to make rounds.
Making rounds is a fixed task of the security system.
During each work shift, he needs to conduct inspections at scheduled times and make detailed inspection records, and during shift changes, he needs to hand over inspection duties.
Just as he stepped out, the pager suddenly buzzed with the captain’s voice.
“Xiao Rong, what floor are you on?”
Rong Ling gripped the pager call button, replied: “I’m in the administrative building, is there something you need?”
Captain: “Come to President Li’s office for a moment.”
Rong Ling disconnected the call.
Li Yufei wants to see him?
He didn’t think much, pressed the elevator button, used the master key card, and directly scanned for the executive office floor.
The elevator arrived with a “ding.”
As soon as the doors opened, Rong Ling stepped out, and the captain eagerly greeted him: “President Li wants to see you, says there’s something important to discuss. I heard President Li thinks highly of you and has always wanted to promote you! You’ve got potential!”
Rong Ling said: “Promote?”
As a security guard, how else could he be promoted.
At most, promoted to the security department manager at best.
This rank has its limits.
Rong Ling wasn’t seeking this either.
The reason he undertakes this job is because he needs it right now.
Once things improve, he’s going to look for a better opportunity.
He’s not someone with high ambitions and low abilities, but he just doesn’t want his life to be trapped in this framework forever.
Rong Ling said: “I understand.”
While he was about to head to Li Yufei’s office, the captain grabbed his arm and whispered in his ear: “If someday you climb up, thanks to President Li, don’t forget me! All this time, I’ve taken good care of you; you should remember this small favor. Don’t get ahead and leave me behind!”
Rong Ling said: “Got it.”
“Alright, go!”
The captain gave him a playful push on the back, muttering sourly: “These days, having a good-looking face really can be a meal ticket!”
Rong Ling heard, but he pretended not to.
Approaching the door, he gently knocked: “President Li, may I come in?”
Li Yufei’s voice came from the office: “Come in.”
Rong Ling pushed open the door and entered.
The spacious office.
Li Yufei was sitting at the desk, casually flipping through several financial reports beside her. As soon as Rong Ling entered, Li Yufei said to him: “Sit on the sofa for a moment, I have a bit of work to finish first.”
Rong Ling said: “No rush.”
He didn’t sit on the sofa, instead, he stood at the door like a sentinel on guard.
Li Yufei didn’t pay him any mind, focusing solely on reviewing the issues in the financial reports.
Half an hour later.
She forwarded the documents, finally wrapping up her tasks at hand.
Li Yufei closed her laptop, lifted her head, saw Rong Ling still standing motionless, she chuckled: “Half an hour, you’ve been standing there without moving an inch?”
Rong Ling said: “What do you need from me?”
Li Yufei stood up, walked over to him, thoroughly sized him up, abruptly asked: “Are you free next Friday?”
