Chapter 695: Chapter 695: Safe Boarding
The enormous hole in the wall, the bloodstains mottled, the glass door, already bombed into shards, and at the entrance, more deaths and injuries, with corpses stacked up yet to be cleared.
On the other side, the embassy leaning against the Government Building remained intact.
Li Yufei parked the car at the embassy’s entrance.
The two got out of the car, just walked to the entrance.
Dawn was just breaking across the sky.
At that moment—
Rong Ling vaguely heard the sound of a gun being loaded.
He calmly raised his hands, saying lightly, “I’m Chinese, not carrying any firearms.”
Li Yufei also raised her hands.
A “click”.
A strong beam of light shone on the two people’s faces from the top of a nearby door.
Li Yufei was dazzled and couldn’t open her eyes.
Rong Ling calmly took a step forward, undergoing “inspection.”
Only after confirming that both were Chinese, did someone come over to open the door.
A “creak”.
Accompanied by the heavy sound of the door opening.
Rong Ling and Li Yufei entered the embassy.
All the windows in the entire embassy were sealed off, due to the power outage, only a few kerosene lamps illuminated inside.
Under the dim light, Rong Ling could finally see clearly, countless Chinese gathered together, some curled up fearfully in the corners, some calmly sitting cross-legged on the floor.
Li Yufei was extremely surprised; she thought most Chinese had already evacuated, not expecting so many still hadn’t had the chance to leave.
Several embassy staff came over.
“Who are you…”
Li Yufei said, “We are Chinese, stranded on the island. We heard there were troubles here and received notification that the embassy is organizing evacuation, so we came here from afar.”
Embassy: “Where are your documents?”
Li Yufei succinctly recounted the upheavals experienced in the past few days.
The staff listened, somewhat surprised, “Oh my, we received news earlier, two days ago, a cruise ship was hijacked at sea and encountered a hurricane. Who knew, you are survivors.”
Li Yufei nervously asked, “Did anyone perish?”
The staff shook their heads, “Not quite clear. During this period, the situation has been unstable, and many messages got interrupted.”
Many workers from Chinese factories were all gathered at the embassy.
Amidst the war, the embassy indeed became a refuge, the final barrier.
No matter what factions, none dared to entertain the thought of moving the embassy, even if initiating airstrikes, they avoided the area where the embassy was located.
Here is absolutely safe.
But it’s crucial to evacuate quickly.
No one can be sure what changes might occur in the coming days.
If, by any chance, the war situation worsens and indiscriminate attacks are launched, then the embassy will no longer be an absolutely safe place.
Li Yufei was about to say something when her peripheral vision suddenly glanced at a spot.
In the corner, a skinny little boy was staring eagerly at her handbag.
Inside her bag were some fruits and food.
The staff quickly explained, “Because many came here temporarily to seek refuge, have been staying here for several days, resources have been scarce continuously, while adults can still withstand it, children haven’t eaten or drank enough for many days.”
Li Yufei walked to the child.
Frightened, the child immediately hid behind a woman, “Mom…”
Li Yufei chuckled, “Don’t be afraid, I’m not a bad person.”
She took out an apple from the handbag, handing it to the child, “Do you want to eat this apple?”
The child was a bit surprised, swallowed saliva in craving, yet still looked up at his mother, seemingly seeking approval.
The woman was moved, “Thank you… My child hasn’t had a proper meal in two days.”
Li Yufei: “No worries, I’m not hungry, let the child have this apple!”
The woman patted the child’s head, “Aren’t you going to thank the lady?”
The child’s eyes sparkled briefly, “Thank you, lady!”
Cautiously accepting the apple, he divided it into two halves, calling over several little friends, taking turns sharing bites.
Li Yufei said, “There are other foods besides this apple.”
She distributed the items from her handbag, leaving only a little for herself and Rong Ling.
The staff said, “Don’t worry, endure a couple more hours, the bus responsible for evacuation will arrive. Then everyone here will evacuate in batches, either from the airport or the port.”
Handling evacuation includes fleets and transport planes.
Once aboard the plane or the ship, there are ample resources to fill the stomach.
Li Yufei and Rong Ling found a vacant spot to sit.
She checked on Rong Ling’s injuries.
The wound had opened again.
Li Yufei heartachingly changed his medicine.
Li Yufei: “Rong Ling, we’re about to go home.”
Rong Ling responded with a “Hm,” instinctively embraced her because of fatigue.
Li Yufei let him lean on her, she could feel his breath becoming heavier.
She knew he must be utterly exhausted.
…
Two hours later.
Outside came the sound of car honking.
The staff opened the door to confirm, joyfully exclaiming, “It’s the evacuation bus!”
Originally, they thought, amidst chaotic warfare, the evacuation buses might arrive a bit late, unexpectedly, they arrived ahead of schedule!
“We’re going home!”
The staff stood at the door, loudly instructed, “Everyone prepare to evacuate! Line up, don’t be nervous, remain calm! We’ve signed a cease-fire agreement, during evacuation, neither side will engage in conflict, it’s temporarily safe, don’t be scared, get on the buses orderly! Rest assured, no one will be left behind, we’re going home together!”
Everyone cheered excitedly, stood up, and began counting numbers.
The crowd lined up neatly, one after another heading outside.
As the door opened at that moment.
Morning light flooded in.
Rong Ling lifted his head, the warm sunlight shone on his weary face.
Li Yufei tightly clutched his hand.
With effort, he supported himself physically, and together with Li Yufei boarded the bus.
As the vehicle moved.
Rong Ling learned that they would return to the country via transport aircraft, once aboard the bus, he just sat down, and the next moment, everything went black, losing consciousness.
“Rong Ling…”
Beneath the ears, came Li Yufei’s unsettled voice, then he was swallowed by boundless darkness again.
…
Unexpectedly, when a person passes out, time seems to pause.
He opened his eyes again.
Outside the window, blue sky and white clouds.
The plane flying across the sky.
He lay on a bed, a nurse was administering an infusion.
Li Yufei was beside him; seeing him awaken, she smiled, “Rong Ling, it’s okay now, we’ve safely boarded.”
Rong Ling: “What happened to me…”
Li Yufei: “The wound got infected, the nurse said you originally lost too much blood, plus physical exhaustion, so…”
The nurse said, “It’s okay now, you’re not in any life-threatening condition.”
Li Yufei said, “If you’re tired, just take a nap, maybe when you wake up, we’ll be back home in the country.”
