Chapter 76: Chapter 76: There Is Nothing Between Her and Me
What did he retract?
And he retracted two messages.
But judging by the last message, it’s highly likely he was saying that tonight’s dinner is on his tab.
Ashley Shaw recalled that Warren Prescott’s attitude in the restaurant wasn’t exactly pleasant, so why was he being polite now?
He wasn’t this polite when he just sat down at the shared table.
Really odd.
Overall, Warren Prescott has been acting unusual lately.
But Ashley Shaw doesn’t want to speculate in other directions, she just thinks he’s brainwashed.
She typed in the message box, "I invited people to dinner tonight, so there’s no trouble for you, keep it."
On the other end of WeChat.
Warren Prescott was staring at the chat interface, waiting for Ashley Shaw to reply.
After waiting for a long time, he finally saw Ashley Shaw’s name change to "The other party is typing."
His heartbeat inexplicably quickened.
Suddenly, the text "The other party is typing" switched back to Ashley Shaw’s WeChat name.
And then nothing changed.
He frowned in confusion, wondering what was going on when suddenly a message popped up on his phone.
End number 8888 card received a transfer.
He opened the message, and the transfer amount was exactly the sum of his bill, sender: Ashley Shaw.
She really didn’t want to owe him anything.
Warren Prescott’s gaze was dark, his eyes were filled with restless emotions.
He pressed the gas pedal, driving towards the bar.
...
Late at night.
Ashley Shaw was deeply asleep, while the phone under her pillow buzzed incessantly.
Ashley Shaw, still with her eyes closed, groggily reached for the phone under the pillow, finally grabbing it after a while.
At that moment, the ringing stopped.
Ashley Shaw also stopped and went back to sleep.
However, it wasn’t long before the phone started vibrating again.
This time, Ashley Shaw was awakened slightly, she accurately pulled the phone, relying on muscle memory to press the answer key.
"...Hello?"
The voice carried a thick sense of fatigue and displeasure.
Yet, there was no sound from the other end, only faint breaths could be heard.
Ashley Shaw frowned with her eyes closed.
"Who is it?"
"..."
"If you don’t speak, I’m hanging up."
A voice finally came from the other side: "It’s me."
Upon hearing that familiar voice, Ashley Shaw suddenly blinked open her eyes, squinting at the bright phone screen to check the caller ID.
It was indeed Warren Prescott, she wasn’t mistaken.
She glanced at the time, over one a.m.
What’s he up to at this late hour?
"What’s up?"
However, Warren Prescott at the other end was silent again.
Ashley Shaw was irritated, directly hanging up the call to continue sleeping.
But before she could fall asleep, the phone rang again.
It was still Warren Prescott calling.
Ashley’s drowsiness was replaced by anger.
She sat up abruptly, picked up the phone, and pressed the answer key.
"Warren, what kind of nonsense are you up to in the middle of the night? You might not sleep, but others still need to sleep!"
"Ashley..."
The voice on the other end carried a hint of grievance: "I’m drunk tonight too."
Ashley Shaw’s expression froze.
What does he mean?
Then Warren Prescott said, "I’m drunk, can you come pick me up?"
Ashley Shaw chuckled.
"Eldest Young Master Prescott, you dialed the wrong number; you should have Mr. Coleman come for you. I don’t have a car, nor do I want to pick you up."
The last time was already the last time.
And previously she agreed to go because the sports committee said he fought for her.
But she regretted it later, she shouldn’t have gone, and there’s no way she’d go this time?
Besides, judging by Warren’s tone of voice, he hadn’t even gotten drunk!
On the other end, Warren Prescott fell silent for two seconds, and before Ashley’s patience completely ran out, he spoke again.
"Are you with Archie?"
"This seems unrelated to you, doesn’t it?"
There was a faint chuckle on the other side, and he suddenly said, "That girl in the restaurant isn’t my girlfriend, her surname is Sutton; she’s the daughter of my business partner, filling in for her dad to sign contracts. Her dad fell ill and couldn’t come, so after signing, I took her out for dinner, and then happened to run into you."
He paused and said clearly, "There’s nothing between us."
Ashley Shaw knitted her brows.
Why was Warren Prescott explaining this to her?
"You really seem to have drunk too much, I’ll call Mr. Coleman for you, wait there for him."
Then Ashley Shaw directly hung up the phone and called Mr. Coleman.
Mr. Coleman quickly answered, asking puzzled, "Miss Ashley? Do you need something from me?"
"I’m sorry to bother you so late, where are you right now?"
"I’m at the bar entrance, waiting for the young master to come out."
That, much better.
"Warren seemed drunk, he just called me. Could you please go in and bring him out?"
"Huh? Okay, I’ll go in right away."
"Alright, I’ll hang up then."
Ashley Shaw ended the call and sighed deeply.
She glanced at the phone, thought for a while, and directly turned it off, in case someone who drank too much inexplicably called her again.
But as she lay back down and closed her eyes, her mind was extremely alert, she couldn’t sleep at all.
Unconsciously, she began to ponder why Warren Prescott specifically called to explain about the girl with surname Sutton?
And why insist on finding out if she’s with Cillian Xavier?
She really doesn’t want to suspect Warren suddenly got interested in her because he was brainwashed, but thinking it through, the only thing that seemed to explain his peculiar behavior was that.
If it was due to feeling guilty for misunderstanding her in the past, it wouldn’t make sense why he’d care about whether she misunderstands his relationship with Miss Sutton.
So what’s his deal now?
Is he watching too many melodramatic TV shows with chase-and-regret storylines and wants to experience it firsthand?
But whatever the reason Warren suddenly acts this way, there’s no way she’d return to how things were with him.
The more Ashley Shaw thought about it, the more agitated she became, she ended up rummaging through her things for a melatonin pill, put on her sleep mask, and forced herself to sleep.
Maybe the melatonin took effect, sleepiness finally hit her, and she slowly fell asleep.
On the other side, Warren Prescott tried to call Ashley Shaw again, but the phone only responded with a mechanical female voice, "The number you are calling is currently turned off."
She actually turned off her phone directly.
At that moment, Mr. Coleman found him in the booth.
This was supposed to be a busy time for the bar, but since Warren Prescott’s incident with Kane King, the bar’s been closed for a few days, Warren unlocked the door himself to drink here, and he was the behind-the-scenes boss so he had the keys.
Mr. Coleman found Warren Prescott just as the mechanical voice finished playing, angering him so much that he threw his phone on the ground.
Mr. Coleman immediately walked over to pick it up, checking if the phone was damaged.
He turned on the screen, and it stayed on Ashley Shaw’s call history page.
The last call was Warren dialing out, the other side didn’t answer.
Mr. Coleman’s intention was to examine the phone, but he saw these unexpectedly.
Somewhat astonished, he looked at Warren Prescott.
Warren Prescott faced Mr. Coleman with an emotionless expression.
"Why did you come in? Didn’t I tell you to wait outside?"
