Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Resistance
Prescott Family.
After Warren Prescott hung up the call with the convenience store manager, he went to Elder Prescott’s room.
"Part-time job?"
"Yeah."
"Why didn’t you ask your dad about this? I’m retired now."
"It’s not for me. It’s for... a high school friend of mine. You know, he never liked my friends."
Elder Prescott put down the chess manual he was holding.
"You know the company rules at headquarters. Even high school graduates and regular undergraduates find it hard to take on even the most basic positions at headquarters. How about this, would your friend be willing to join the esports company? A grandson of an old friend of mine just started a professional player club. Your friend could go there and assist the professional players. It’s a light job and they can leave whenever necessary without affecting university enrollment."
"That’s fine."
"Alright, I’ll help you get it arranged in the next couple of days. Your friend will start in logistics."
"Thank you, Grandpa."
Just as Warren Prescott was about to leave, Elder Prescott suddenly asked, "Is your friend’s last name Shaw?"
Warren Prescott paused in his steps.
"Grandpa..."
Elder Prescott laughed.
"Never mind, just pretend I didn’t ask. You can go!"
"Okay."
Warren Prescott quickly walked away, feeling inexplicably guilty for some reason.
On his way downstairs, he bumped into Rosalind Lynch, who was heading upstairs to find him.
Seeing him coming down, Rosalind Lynch immediately showed a bright smile.
"Warren, you’re down here! I was just about to go to your room to look for you."
Warren Prescott seriously examined the face in front of him.
To say nothing else, Rosalind Lynch was indeed a stunning beauty.
Back in middle school, everyone had a certain vanity, and he was happy to take Rosalind Lynch out to play.
Even when Rosalind Lynch would casually mention to others that he was her boyfriend, he never bothered to refute it.
But looking at this face now, it inexplicably feels a bit lacking in feeling, and there’s an indescribable sense of resistance.
How could one return to their initial feelings for such a face, upon seeing the dirty soul beneath its beauty?
Only to see Rosalind Lynch show a look of grievance, saying, "I called you twice after I got home yesterday, and you didn’t pick up."
"I turned off my phone."
Warren Prescott responded casually and headed downstairs.
Rosalind Lynch bit her lip.
After she sang that song yesterday, Warren Prescott’s attitude suddenly became cold, but she really didn’t know what she did wrong.
Was it really just because of that song?
Unwilling to accept it, Rosalind Lynch chased him downstairs.
"Warren, I want to know..."
"Rosalind." Warren Prescott turned his head to look at her, "I’m a bit busy today, so I can’t be with you. You should go find my mom instead."
After saying that, he walked away without looking back.
When Claudia Jennings came out of the kitchen, she saw Rosalind Lynch staring blankly at the door, with her eyes red.
She quickly went over to ask.
"What happened? Who upset you?"
"No one..." Rosalind Lynch quickly shook her head and then whispered, "Warren seems not to like taking me out to play anymore. I don’t know what I did wrong."
Claudia Jennings was taken aback, then smiled.
"You know how he is, don’t you? His moods come and go as he pleases; you don’t need to care about what he thinks."
"Besides, he’s not taking you out, but he’s not taking any other girl either."
"How about this, since he’s not accompanying you, I’ll accompany you. I’ve found a teacher to give a lesson on flower arranging this afternoon. After lunch, we can learn together?"
Rosalind Lynch’s mood turned from cloudy to sunny.
Yes.
Warren hadn’t taken any other girl out besides her.
She shouldn’t be too greedy.
Thinking this, Rosalind Lynch hugged Claudia Jennings’s arm.
"Okay, I’ll accompany Auntie in flower arranging. I love flowers the most."
...
Bus stop.
After Ashley Shaw got off the bus, she wasn’t in a hurry to go to the store. Instead, she called Shane Coleman.
"Attorney Coleman, does what we discussed yesterday still hold?"
Shane Coleman was in a great mood.
After Ashley Shaw’s reminder yesterday, he had indeed discovered something strange between the superstar’s wife and the superstar’s agent. Now, he’s just waiting to gather solid evidence.
However, gathering the evidence should only take two days. This big case is practically a sure win for him.
He owes a lot to Ashley Shaw for this.
"Of course, it holds. I should be thanking you."
"No need for thanks, we both get what we want. My friend’s case should be going to trial soon. When the time comes, whatever we need to prepare, say, or do, we’ll need your detailed guidance."
"No problem, within three days, I’ll have everything ready for you."
"Thank you."
"No need to be polite."
Ending the call, Shane Coleman called his assistant in.
"Have you found the information about that girl we talked about yesterday?"
The assistant nodded, placing a document ready for submission onto Shane Coleman’s desk.
"That’s all of it. The girl’s background is simple yet not so simple."
"She’s an ordinary girl from a single-parent family. Her mom used to work as a maid for the Prescott Family and passed away from stomach cancer, after which the Prescott Family adopted her."
"But the girl has since moved out and currently resides at her high school friend’s place."
The assistant succinctly explained.
Shane Coleman squinted his eyes.
"Prescott Family? Is it that Prescott Family?"
The assistant laughed, "Is there any other family in Westcroft that can be referred to as the ’Prescott Family’?"
Shane Coleman twirled the pen in his hand.
"Got it. You may leave."
The assistant couldn’t help but curiously ask, "Are you really going to help her?"
"I’m not someone who breaks my word."
"Then why investigate her?"
"I’m just worried she could be sent by the opposing law firm to stir up trouble. Since she’s related to the Prescott Family, it shouldn’t have anything to do with their case."
Someone from the Prescott Family wouldn’t get involved in a tussle between law firms.
He felt at ease, focusing now on resolving the superstar’s matter swiftly.
Meanwhile, Ashley Shaw arrived at the convenience store.
The manager was talking to the heavily made-up female employee with whom she had exchanged shifts earlier that morning. Upon seeing Ashley Shaw enter, they both stopped speaking.
"Shaw, you’re here?"
Ashley Shaw nodded.
"Hello, Manager."
"Hello, Hello." The manager smiled and said to the employee, "Shaw is here, gather your things and get ready to leave."
The female employee walked to the changing room without expression.
Ashley Shaw followed her into the changing room.
This chain convenience store required employees to wear a blue vest with the store’s logo during shifts.
But there were only two vests.
Divided by gender.
Ashley Shaw placed her backpack in the locker and was waiting for the other employee to take off the vest when she heard the employee scoff coldly, "Why experience your life by ruining someone else’s job?"
Ashley Shaw was taken aback, instinctively asking, "Are you talking to me?"
The female employee suddenly took off the vest quickly, throwing it at Ashley Shaw’s face, looking extremely displeased.
"What’s wrong with talking to you?"
"Aren’t you afraid that your bad deeds will never get you anywhere!"
After speaking, the female employee grabbed her bag and stormed off, bumping Ashley Shaw’s shoulder on her way out.
By the time Ashley Shaw chased outside, the person was already gone.
"Shaw, what are you looking at?" The manager followed her out.
Ashley Shaw suddenly glanced at the manager.
"She didn’t resign voluntarily, did she, Manager?"
