Chapter 306: Chapter 306: You Really Know Your Place
Cillian Xavier’s gaze momentarily blurred, and just as he was about to change his mind with determination, a phone call came in.
Seeing the caller ID, Cillian Xavier’s pupils suddenly constricted, and he immediately answered the call.
"Hello, Finn."
Finn is Ivy Bond’s brother.
He’s completely different from Ivy and hasn’t picked up a shred of the nouveau riche air of the Bond Family.
Now, he’s working even harder than when the Bond Family was poorer.
That’s why Cillian likes Finn but can’t stand Ivy, yet he and Finn have become good friends.
There’s no need for beating around the bush between good friends.
Finn directly stated his purpose: "Ivy called me half an hour ago, said she couldn’t reach you... Are you okay?"
Cillian’s stomach was feeling uncomfortable now.
He held the phone tightly, adjusted to a more comfortable position, and said honestly, "Last night, I went out to welcome a friend and drank too much, just woke up now."
"I can tell, your voice sounds like a duck."
"Why don’t you mention how your voice was during your voice change period? That was a real duck’s quack."
"You didn’t fare much better back then. I had already shot up in height, while you were still short like an elementary school kid."
"I am now six-foot-one, one centimeter taller than you."
"Well, coincidentally, I’ve grown a centimeter this year."
"Are you serious? With your current state of working day and night on research, you can still grow taller? I’m worried you’ll starve yourself."
"I won’t starve, don’t worry. I have to hold on until the project is over, then properly treat you to a meal, thank you for taking care of Ivy."
When mentioning Ivy Bond, Cillian’s smile faded a bit.
Even though Finn couldn’t see Cillian’s face, he could sense his attitude from the momentary silence.
He indeed hoped to become closer with Cillian, but his sister... to be honest, she wasn’t even compatible with one of Cillian’s toes.
Not to mention their backgrounds, standing together just makes them seem worlds apart.
Moreover, Ivy is sick now...
Finn sighed inwardly and said, "Archie, I really need to thank you."
Cillian said, "We’re brothers, no need for thanks. Before you return, it’s only right to take care of her for you. By the way, when are you coming back?"
"In a week or two."
Cillian was a bit surprised.
"Isn’t your research scheduled to finish in over half a year? Are you coming back specifically for Ivy? Didn’t you decide to stay away for now, letting your parents return first so she wouldn’t suspect anything?"
Finn said, "I’m planning to change careers."
Cillian threw out a question mark.
Finn continued, "I’m planning to study medicine."
Cillian frowned, "You... a person working on intelligent robots... studying medicine? For Ivy?"
"Yes. But saying I’m learning medicine isn’t accurate. I’m planning to switch research fields. Have you heard of nano robots?"
"Heard of it from the news."
"I’m planning to specialize in that field. If the research succeeds, it might save Ivy. If... I’m too late, at least I’ll have tried, and in the future, it could benefit other sick people. It’s better than my current profit-driven research."
Cillian paused for a moment and said, "It’s good that you’re thinking that way. But this means you’re starting from scratch."
"Ivy is my sister... though she has countless flaws and bad habits, we share the same blood. I can’t just give up."
"Since you’ve made up your mind, as your brother, of course, I’ll support you. If you need any help, feel free to ask."
"Thanks, I won’t put up pretenses. I might really need your help in introducing a few top neuroscientists. I need to understand neurobiology before I start preparing in my own field."
Thanks to his mom’s connection with Dr. Tate, Cillian knows quite a few top figures in the medical field, so he agreed immediately: "Sure, no problem."
"Thanks."
"Why thank me? You’re allowed to serve humanity, but I can’t contribute?"
Finn chuckled twice on the other end.
But then, Finn’s tone became serious again and said, "I heard from Ivy that you accepted her confession?"
Cillian’s expression froze, and he replied, "Hmm."
"You’re really, really..." Finn hesitated for a long time before sighing and saying, "I owe you a favor that I probably can’t repay in this lifetime."
"Are you treating me like I’m not your brother? You’re thanking me all day."
"I won’t say it, won’t say it anymore, once I return, I’ll treat you to dinner."
"Alright, I’ll start finding the most expensive hotel in Westcroft now, anyway you’re not short on money."
"No problem, no matter how expensive, it’s my treat."
Someone called for Finn on the other side, so he had to say, "I’ll get busy, talk next time. Sorry to trouble you with my sister for now, hopefully, once she’s accepted..."
"We’ll talk about that later, you go handle your stuff."
"Hmm."
The call ended with no trace of a smile on Cillian’s face.
This call extinguished the spark of hope sparked by the driver’s words just now.
The driver wanted to resume the earlier conversation, but Cillian suddenly looked out the car window and said, "Driver, let’s stop here."
"Huh?" The driver looked out the window, right at an ultra-five-star hotel.
Paying and exiting the car, the driver suddenly rolled down the front passenger window.
"Young man, keep up the good work! I hope the next time you ride with me, you’re with someone else."
"Thank you."
Cillian tugged at his lips, but there was no trace of a smile in his eyes.
Meanwhile.
Ashley Shaw, after being hung up on by Cillian, met Ivy Bond’s gaze and said, "I called as you told me to, can I have my phone back now?"
Ivy curled her lips in satisfaction and handed the phone back to her.
"You’re quite sensible."
Ashley Shaw put away the phone, expressionless, and said, "Has anyone told you how impolite that sounds?"
Ivy scoffed and then took off a Bvlgari bracelet from her wrist, handing it over.
Ashley asked, "What for?"
"Your reward."
Ashley laughed at this.
Ivy really looks down on her from the bones, huh?
But since Ashley didn’t argue with Ivy just now, she’s even less inclined to argue now.
"No need, keep it for yourself. My friend is waiting, I’m leaving."
After saying that, Ashley headed downstairs.
The bodyguard used his eyes to ask Ivy if they should stop her.
Ivy gently shook her head.
No need to block her.
She confirmed from the call just now, Ashley and Cillian might not be what she previously thought.
If she had known it would turn out like this, she wouldn’t have broken Ashley’s phone charger.
If she hadn’t broken her charger, she wouldn’t have fallen and had to be hospitalized for a concussion.
Then again, if it weren’t for her hospitalization, there might not have been such a good opportunity for confession.
So, she should actually thank Ashley, there’s no need to trouble her anymore.
