Chapter 79: Chapter 79: Jumping Through the Window
Mr. Fu saw that the pleasantries had gone on long enough and, feeling it was time, he cheerfully set aside the work he was doing.
Then, he went to the sink, washed his hands, dried them off, and turned around to leave.
After Mr. Fu left the courtyard, Mrs. Fu, just like she had been watching Jiang Xin earlier, kept her eyes fixed on Mr. Fu’s back until he was out of sight, then she finally felt relieved.
After all, Mrs. Fu knew Mr. Fu well. If Mr. Fu found out what she was about to do, he would definitely stop her and wouldn’t let her sneak away with Jiang Xin’s things.
Mrs. Fu wouldn’t let her plans be thwarted by Mr. Fu.
So, she found a way to send Mr. Fu away using this opportunity.
With no one left at home, naturally, no one could stop her.
Mrs. Fu let out a little snort.
Thinking that Mr. Fu might have been smart all his life, but in the end, wasn’t he still played around by her?
That old guy is no match for her. If he wants to play mind games, he’s not at her level.
Now, the house was empty. She could do whatever she wanted, and no one could stop her. She was the boss of this house.
Though Mrs. Fu felt quite smug, she was unaware that Mr. Fu was watching her from behind.
These old folks played their mind games one after another.
Both thought they were smart, but really, there’s always a bigger fish.
Mrs. Fu, wearing a look of nonchalance, walked to Jiang Xin’s door. She was feeling all proud, but when she tried the door handle, she found it was locked.
On closer inspection, she saw a big padlock on what was once an empty lock spot.
Clearly, Jiang Xin did it on purpose.
To guard against her, the family thief. She was worried Mrs. Fu would steal her stuff.
Honestly!
Mrs. Fu was instantly deflated and fuming; because of Jiang Xin’s actions, her plan had failed.
She had everything planned out, but Jiang Xin’s padlock messed it all up.
How could Mrs. Fu not be angry?
To put it another way, in the Fu Family, every corner of every room belonged to her.
Even though Jiang Xin married into their family, she had no right to lock the doors on her territory.
She didn’t have the right to do so!
Mrs. Fu was furious. She was very displeased with Jiang Xin for locking the door.
It felt like her territory had been invaded by someone else.
Mrs. Fu laughed in anger, her eyes darting as she quickly came up with an idea.
In this hot summer, there’s more than one way to get into the room.
The door, even though Jiang Xin locked it,
Mrs. Fu thought, what’s the use of Jiang Xin guarding against her? When it comes to experience, Jiang Xin was still a bit too green to compete with her.
If she couldn’t get through the door, she could just jump in through the window.
Anyway, today, Mrs. Fu’s rebellious spirit was triggered. Jiang Xin locked the door to keep her out of the room.
But she was determined to get in there to see what secrets Jiang Xin was hiding!
Mrs. Fu decided to go all in, the door was locked, so she decided to jump in through the window.
After all, she had plenty of ways to enter the room.
Mrs. Fu went outside, heading to the window. Back in those days, windows could be opened from both outside and inside.
Though Mrs. Fu was getting on in years, she wasn’t even sixty yet.
So while her legs weren’t as nimble as when she was young, they were still capable. Jumping through a window was no problem for her.
Plus, rural folks were used to physical work, so they were in pretty good shape.
Jumping through a window was just a task she could handle easily.
Mr. Fu’s card-playing buddy was their neighbor, so after Mrs. Fu got Mr. Fu out of the house,
Mr. Fu turned around, entered the neighbor’s courtyard, and told him the card game was postponed till the afternoon.
The card buddy agreed happily and went to inform the others.
Those guys didn’t have much to do all day. After getting older, those with kids would look after their grandchildren at home, while those without just lazed around playing cards to pass the time.
If they couldn’t play in the morning, then they’d play in the afternoon, they understood. As long as they could play today, it was fine.
After informing his buddy, Mr. Fu rushed home, curious to see what Mrs. Fu would do while he was away that would shock him.
As Mr. Fu approached the front gate and glanced inside the yard, he was startled.
It was pure coincidence that he caught Mrs. Fu about to jump in through the window.
Mr. Fu was truly shocked.
He never expected his old wife to do such a surprising thing.
Though Mrs. Fu was not yet sixty, if she accidentally fell while jumping through the window, it would be bad news. After all, as people age, their reflexes slow down.
If she fell, not only would she suffer, but if she broke something, it would cost them a lot in hospital bills.
So, Mr. Fu’s heart was in his mouth.
Because by now, Mrs. Fu was already on the windowsill, Mr. Fu feared that if he shouted, he might scare Mrs. Fu.
If he startled her and she accidentally fell off the sill, it would be terrible. Her old bones couldn’t take a fall; a fracture would lead to everyone’s frustration.
Therefore, Mr. Fu stayed silent and didn’t charge boldly into the courtyard like before.
Instead, he quietly watched from outside the courtyard, keeping an eye on Mrs. Fu’s every move, ready to help her if necessary.
Mr. Fu was sweating nervously.
He watched as Mrs. Fu quietly opened the window and climbed onto the sill. Their house had a simple layout, with the window opening right onto the heated bed.
So when Mrs. Fu set her foot inside, Mr. Fu finally relaxed.
Knowing Mrs. Fu wouldn’t fall, Mr. Fu could now calmly observe what Mrs. Fu was up to, jumping through their own window in broad daylight.
It couldn’t be anything good.
Otherwise, she could have just used the door. The window meant the door was inaccessible to her.
