Chapter 533: 469 Magic and Magic
Meeting with the Queen, meeting with the Elf Knights.
Although he had made such bold statements, Reiger clearly couldn’t go to Camelot now.
As the saying goes, he was new here, not even familiar with the geography of Fairy Country Britain, and even if he wanted to use a "portal" to get to Camelot, it was impossible. Besides, it was now dark, and Altoria, a country fairy by his side, had limited knowledge of the outside world; Reiger could only temporarily come up with a plan.
"Rest for the night and head to the nearest city tomorrow to resupply a bit."
Unlike fairies who do not need to eat, Reiger still needed to replenish supplies. Although he could solve this problem with magic, he also wanted to understand the geography of Fairy Country Britain, preferably with a map. Otherwise, there would be problems with his actions going forward.
So, the primary goal became to find a city nearby, where he could gather the supplies and information he needed.
Regarding this, Altoria had no objection; in fact, she even declared on the spot.
"I will come with you!"
Obviously, this fairy girl was getting a little too attached to Reiger, and for now, she definitely didn’t want to act alone.
"Then let’s rest here for the night."
Having made the decision, Reiger found an open space without rocks or other obstructions and activated his magic there.
"[Fortress Creation]."
As this magic was activated, the ground began to shake.
"Boom boom boom...!"
Accompanied by a rumbling sound and vibration, a massive and heavy tower rose from beneath the ground.
It was a tower with thick fortified double doors, its walls studded with countless spikes, and at its highest point, there sat a demonic statue overlooking all directions. It was at least thirty meters tall, resembling both a fortress and a towering tree.
"Aye aye aye aye aye aye——!?"
Witnessing the sudden emergence of the towering tower, Altoria was startled, letting out an uncontrollable scream.
"What is this thing...!?"
The fairy who was heralded as the savior screamed rudely, nearly deafening the ears of the initiator nearby.
"What are you screaming for?" Reiger, somewhat discontented, said, "Isn’t it just a bit of wizardry? Is that so surprising?"
However, far from being placated, Altoria’s words became more incoherent upon hearing Reiger’s.
"Wizardry? You call this wizardry?" Altoria exclaimed, "I’ve never heard of such a wizardry before!"
In this world, wizardry and magic are two completely different concepts.
Wizardry refers to phenomena that transcend common understanding, the human reenactment of miracles and supernatural forces.
In short, it is the magic of this world that one can learn, study, train, and enhance artificially.
However, the concept of magic also exists in this world and is distinguished from wizardry.
Whilst wizardry is indeed a supernatural force, in this world, if a phenomenon can be achieved through technological means, then it would only be referred to as wizardry, not as magic.
Take, for instance, the magic Reiger commonly uses, the Fireball, a third-tier area-of-effect attack spell; essentially, it’s a power that ignites a large-scale flame within a certain area to scorch things.
Humans, with their technology, could achieve a similar thing, right?
Under such circumstances, Reiger’s Fireball would be considered wizardry in this world, not magic.
On the other hand, phenomena that science and technology cannot possibly achieve would be considered magic in this world.
For example, Time Stop, a spell capable of halting the flow of time in the world, is currently impossible to replicate with human science and technology.
Therefore, Time Stop could be called magic in this world because it’s a phenomenon that science and technology can’t yet achieve.
When a phenomenon can be precisely executed simply by spending time and money, no matter how difficult the method, the supernatural power that can cause the same phenomenon would not be considered magic but would be relegated to wizardry.
Only when the phenomenon is beyond the scope of human civilization to achieve does such a supernatural force become magic.
Therefore, as science and technology advance and humans are able to do more and more, the number of magics becomes fewer and fewer, resulting in an exceedingly rare selection of magic remaining in this era—so few they could be counted on one hand.
Bearing this in mind, Reiger called his abilities wizardry to make it easier for Altoria to understand.
Incidentally, in this world, those who use wizardry are usually called magicians, while those who use magic are often referred to as magi.
Because of this, Reiger also could not refer to himself as a magician in this world. He must either call himself a magician or a magi, which would be easiest for people to understand.
However, even though Reiger made it quite clear, Altoria still seemed frightened.
There was no helping it.
She had never heard of this kind of wizardry that could effortlessly create a massive tower right before her eyes.
Fairies, with their innate sense of mystery, might be able to achieve such a feat with their own power, but please forgive Altoria, who for now was just a naïve country fairy; she had never witnessed wizardry on such a scale before.
