"The Mohe organization, it's the Song family's! Otherwise, why would they be called the foremost family in the Northeast? I only knew their business had some shady aspects, like dealing in 'night-shining pearls.' It wasn't until Kun Kun told me yesterday that night-shining pearls are actually demon cores, and the Song family are demon hunters!" Chen Lu said, her voice filled with righteous indignation. Her allegiance was now unquestionable; between humans and demons, she had undoubtedly sided with the demons, viewing demon hunters as "evil."
"I did tell you," the fox demon said. "So how did you determine that Mohe is the Song family?"
Chen Lu swiped on her phone, opening WeChat and finding a contact labeled "Song Dog." She opened his Moments feed, which was filled with Song Wenzhi's smug selfies – showing off watches, cars, mansions, yachts, and vacations. There was even a helicopter, though it was unclear if it was private.
Chen Lu tapped on a photo of Song Wenzhi flaunting a mansion and zoomed in. In the background was a very high-end-looking computer. She zoomed in further on the computer screen and saw a folder. The folder's name was prominently displayed: "Mohe Group Third Quarter Financial Accounts"!
"I checked Tianyan," Chen Lu stated. "There are no companies related to Mohe registered. What company would have such a strange name! Moreover, the company the Song family publicly operates is called 'Blackwater.' I checked history books again, and it turns out—"
"Blackwater Mohe!" I exclaimed. Song Lei's diary mentioned this. It was a term for an ethnic group or tribe. It existed during the Tang Dynasty and was a direct ancestor of the Manchu people. Because they lived in the area of the lower Heilongjiang River, they were called the 'Blackwater Mohe.'"
"I didn't expect you to have a talent for being a 'night scout'!" the fox demon chuckled.
"Based on this alone, I still couldn't be certain, so I took a risk and called Song Wenzhi directly," Chen Lu continued, operating her phone again to play a call recording.
"Yo, Lulu, it's rare for you to call me proactively. What, you've come around? Willing to sleep with me?" Song Wenzhi's lewd voice came from the recording.
"Song Wenzhi, I want to ask you something."
"Go ahead and ask."
"If I marry you, can you tell me what your family actually does?"
"No need. As long as you're willing to sleep with me for one night, I'll tell you. Hehehe!" Song Wenzhi laughed. He was fixated on sleeping with her, a state of hormonal frenzy that even I felt inferior to.
"I'm mainly worried that if your family is involved in illegal business, I might be implicated in the future if I marry into it," Chen Lu said unhurriedly, continuing to draw him out.
"Ridiculous! Who dares to touch my family!" Song Wenzhi boasted arrogantly. "You'll be mine sooner or later anyway, Song Wenzhi. It doesn't hurt to tell you now. Lulu, do you know what a night-shining pearl is?"
"I don't know."
"Heh heh, night-shining pearls aren't antiques or collectibles. They're things from inside an animal. Very valuable. Our family got rich by collecting these things!"
Seeing that Song Wenzhi was still not telling the truth, Chen Lu cut to the chase: "The last time I was at your house, I saw financial data for the Mohe Group on your desk. Is the Mohe Group the one that does this?"
Song Wenzhi in the recording clearly paused, but he still readily admitted, "Yeah, did you see the specific data?"
"No, I only saw a filename. I wouldn't be so uncouth as to casually open someone's computer files," Chen Lu said, feigning coyness.
"That's good. The data inside isn't something you can see now. However, I can tell you that the revenue inside is higher than you can possibly imagine. Hehehe!"
"How high?"
"Come to my place and make me happy for a night, and I'll show you!"
The recording ended abruptly here.
"Hey, hey, we were just getting to the good part!" the fox demon complained. "Why did it stop?"
Chen Lu rolled her eyes at her. "I hung up after that. Does this count as evidence?"
"It's pretty much ironclad," I said.
"So, you can't say I'm using you, right? Anyway, you already have a grudge against them. Even if you don't provoke them, they'll come to seek revenge, won't they?"
"It's only a matter of time," the fox demon added fuel to the fire.
