Chapter 287: Chapter 68 Two Gun Battles
As time passed, the battlefield shrank smaller and smaller until the final circle had arrived.
All the competitors were Immortals, and there were as many as twenty thousand participants. Excluding those eliminated and the unlucky ones, nearly ten thousand remained. This made the final circle extremely lively.
The ground, littered with huge boulders, echoed with gunfire, punctuated by occasional explosions. Careful listeners could also hear many people’s wails and curses.
Hiding at the very edge, Chen Jiuge said confidently, "As long as we hide for a while and let them fight it out, the ultimate victory will definitely be ours."
"Junior Brother, this isn’t very manly. We should just go out and fight," Wudao Tian said, shaking his head with a rocket launcher in one hand and an AK-47 in the other.
Wen Ruo remarked, "Actually, I think Junior Brother’s idea is good; there are too many people now."
Die Luowu agreed, "Right, Dao Tian, I think we can wait until there are fewer people before we fight."
"No way, I can’t hold back any longer! It’s the final circle anyway. You three team up, and I’ll go solo," Wudao Tian declared, barely able to restrain his restlessness.
Hearing this, Die Luowu showed an indulgent yet helpless expression and said, "Let’s stick together."
Although Eldest Senior Brother was rash, he was also quite smart. At least he knew not to just rush out shouting. Instead, he used the huge boulders scattered across the ground as cover to slowly enter the battlefield.
"Senior Sister, it’s time for us to make a move." Chen Jiuge, seeing that his senior brother and Die Luowu were still safe for the moment, picked up Zhu Yinghuang and called out to Wen Ruo to get ready.
"Junior Brother, put me down," Zhu Yinghuang, left with only one hand, said very seriously.
Moved by her gaze, Chen Jiuge finally let out a sigh. He left her a gun and a few grenades before withdrawing.
Perhaps it’s because Immortals prefer to fight head-on, but there were almost no enemies at the very edges.
After leaping over several dozen boulders, Chen Jiuge took a deep breath and said, "Senior Sister, throw a smoke grenade as far as you can. When the smoke appears, throw a hand grenade to draw the others’ attention for me."
Wen Ruo looked somewhat worried but didn’t refuse.
A red smoke grenade traced a beautiful arc through the air, landing about a hundred meters away. Coincidentally, two players who had lost their fighting spirit were hiding there.
"What is that?" Taking advantage of the yellow skin inherent to their marble people form, the two had buried themselves in the ground, well hidden.
"A bomb? Hurry, hurry!"
The other marble person looked terrified, scrabbling frantically with both hands, trying to flee.
HISS HISS HISS.
Red smoke billowed out, and a hint of terror appeared on the faces of the two marble people.
Just as they had managed to dig themselves halfway out, a round object suddenly appeared between them.
"Oh no."
The two marble people had expressions of utter despair—this was really the end for them.
BOOM!
The small hand of one of the yellow marble people was blasted behind a nearby boulder. Coincidentally, another team was hiding behind that boulder—it was Da Bai’s team.
"Who’s being so rude?" Da Bai, slightly annoyed, removed the severed hand from his forehead.
"Bring my cannon over."
"Is that necessary? Once we fire, we won’t be able to hide," Qi Daoyuan said in a calming tone.
"Then we won’t hide! Can’t our gear kill them? After listening for so long, the most powerful weapon out there seems to be just a rocket launcher," Da Bai sneered.
"Alright then. Yue Li, give us a hand pushing it," Qi Daoyuan said, thinking it over and agreeing.
Each boulder was concave, with a large hollow in the middle. The space was ample, but the boulders weren’t very high, specifically designed for the final showdown.
A heavy cannon was slowly pushed to the front by Yue Li.
If Chen Jiuge were here, he would definitely recognize this—it’s an Italian cannon!
"Battalion Commander, fire!"
Da Bai, of course, didn’t know the classic line; he yelled, "Blow them to smithereens!"
The Italian cannon, modified by Elders from two Sects, was several times more powerful than the original. The dark shells landed near the center, causing massive explosions. The players caught in the blast were obliterated on impact, leaving not even dust behind.
Crawling on the ground, Chen Jiuge stiffened. A cannon? No, ordinary cannons don’t have this kind of power!
Wudao Tian had just wiped out an incautious team hiding behind a boulder. He was about to casually fire his rocket launcher to announce his presence when he saw the explosion.
"Oh my goodness, what kind of cannon is that? Its power is much greater than a rocket launcher," Wudao Tian swallowed hard, a wave of fear washing over him.
Die Luowu, however, paid more attention to the aftermath of the explosion. She reminded him, "Dao Tian, there are quite a few people here. I just took a quick look, and gunfire came from behind at least hundreds of boulders. Excluding those who were less stealthy or who hadn’t managed to fire yet, there are at least a few thousand people here."
"It does seem like there are quite a few. Let’s not act rashly for now."
Perhaps it was the cannon’s intimidating presence, but the previously raging battlefield suddenly fell silent. The scene became eerily quiet.
Chen Jiuge peeked his head out, screaming internally: Come on, fight! If you don’t continue, how can I plant bombs?!
"Everyone, this mindless fighting isn’t getting us anywhere. Since we’re from two major Sects in this league, how about we have a proper confrontation first?" A hoarse female voice, likely amplified by a loudspeaker, echoed over the battlefield.
"How do we know you’re not tricking us into coming out? What if we do, and you suddenly attack us?"
"Exactly!"
"We’re all Immortals, people of status. If you want to take first place, this is the simplest and quickest method," the initial voice spoke again.
What this voice said made sense, but the people present were not children; they still harbored misgivings. They had reached the final circle with great difficulty. If they were lured out and killed, it would be a tremendous loss of face.
"Look over here!"
Chen Jiuge, who was hunkered down, heard the discussions outside. He sneakily peered out, pulling out binoculars to scout the situation.
Near the center of the battlefield, a spirited figure held a megaphone in one hand and an anti-aircraft gun in the other, shouting, "I, a woman, dare to come out! Don’t you lot have even this much courage?"
Hearing this, Chen Jiuge thought to himself, This is bad.
"Who says we don’t dare?" A familiar and bold voice rang out; it was Eldest Senior Brother Wudao Tian.
With someone taking the lead, the participants with higher status also began to emerge one by one.
Men didn’t want to be outdone by a woman, and other women didn’t want to be outdone by *that* woman, which resulted in the majority of them stepping forward.
Chen Jiuge sighed, put the C4 explosive back into his backpack, and walked over to his Eldest Senior Brother’s side with a look of helplessness.
"Anyone else? We’re about to divide into teams. If you don’t come out now, once the teams are formed, don’t blame us for working together to eliminate you!" the woman with the megaphone announced.
"What are you doing?" Da Bai asked, grabbing Yue Li, who was trying to stand up.
"Going out, of course," Yue Li said, as if it were the most natural thing to do.
"Go out my ass! We’re not Cultivators. You tell me, if we open fire on those people right now, how many can we take down?" Da Bai asked, somewhat agitated.
Qi Daoyuan gave him an incredulous look. "If you think you can defeat everyone who has just shown themselves, then by all means."
"So we’re just going to go out like this?" Da Bai was a bit unwilling. His weapons were the strongest; a chaotic melee was his best chance to claim victory.
"Master, over there!" Silver King’s eyes were sharp; he spotted Chen Jiuge at a glance.
Watching Silver King scurry out, Da Bai lamented, Such unreliable teammates.
In the end, he also slowly stood up. The sight of his Italian cannon made everyone else’s heart tremble.
The Elders watching the battle from outside smiled as they watched this situation unfold. Jun Linseng wondered if anyone would dare to make a move now.
"Sect Leader Jun, shall we lend a hand and get them to divide into teams?" You Yi said somewhat sheepishly.
Jun Linseng cocked his head, not quite grasping You Yi’s meaning. "Hmm?"
"The marble person who made that suggestion is our Sect Master," You Yi confessed with an awkward grin.
"Ah, it’s Sect Leader You (Ruo)! I was wondering who had such nerve. Haha, very well, let’s lend a hand," Jun Linseng naturally wouldn’t refuse this courtesy.
"By the decision of the two Sects, a grand battle between them will now commence! The victorious Sect will claim first place. During this battle, participants cannot harm their own teammates. The battle zones will now be demarcated."
Several Golden Immortals joined forces to transform the area. The originally scattered boulder fortifications began to merge, and disciples of the two Sects were automatically divided into camps.
Looking at the trenches before him, Chen Jiuge suddenly had a strange feeling. It’s like I’ve traveled back in time to one of those Anti-Japanese War TV dramas from my previous life; it’s just too similar.
What Chen Jiuge didn’t know was that You Yi had actually visited the small worlds depicted in those Anti-Japanese War dramas.
"Hehehe, I’ve also prepared some surprises," You Yi said with satisfaction, looking at the scene unfolding within the battlefield.
Apart from the changes to the terrain, all the marble people reverted to their human forms.
Chen Jiuge immediately noticed Da Bai, now sporting a big gold chain, with the Italian cannon beside him.
"Good heavens, where did you get that?" Chen Jiuge exclaimed, caressing the Italian cannon. This has to be the most powerful weapon on the battlefield right now, he thought, unless some people are still hiding even bigger guns.
Da Bai was clearly in a foul mood and didn’t want to talk. Chen Jiuge, however, paid no mind to the sulking Da Bai and motioned for his remaining three teammates to form a small defensive circle around the Italian cannon.
"Let me fire the first shot!" Wudao Tian said, rubbing his hands together with excitement.
He aimed the cannon at the enemy’s fortifications, lit the fuse, and a cannonball successfully landed in the enemy’s territory.
On the other side, the Jiuyou Sect disciples were still reeling from the shock that the person who had just spoken—their Sect Leader—was among them. They hadn’t yet recovered when a violent explosion jolted them back to their senses.
BOOM!
As severed limbs and remains flew into the air, You Ruo’s stunning face took on a serious expression. She shouted, "Everyone, we are comrades-in-arms now! Hold your positions and hit them hard!"
"As you command, Sect Leader!"
With You Ruo present, the Jiuyou Sect disciples naturally followed orders diligently. This resulted in the disorganized Myriad Beasts Sect being continuously pushed back.
Watching her side seize another piece of territory, You Ruo exhaled a puff of smoke and revealed a charming smile. "What good is a cannon? No matter how strong, it’s just one gun. How many can it kill? Anti-aircraft guns are the real truth!"
THUD THUD THUD!
The heavy anti-aircraft gun, seeming as light as straw in You Ruo’s hands, unleashed a fierce barrage on the Myriad Beasts Sect’s defenses. The assault was so intense that it pinned down dozens of their disciples in a small encampment, none daring to raise their heads.
The firepower was simply overwhelming.
"My goodness, who is this woman? She’s pretty fierce," Wudao Tian muttered enviously, eyeing the anti-aircraft gun in her hands. I really want one of those!
