Mysterious Journey
Chapter 32: Pets You Can't Eat
Dumbledore lowered his head, proactively asking the sullen-looking Eileen.
Although he knew that part of the reason might stem from the girl's Veela heritage, facing her pure persistence and the occasional display of attachment to "family," Dumbledore couldn't help but feel a desire to indulge her.
Perhaps this was a sign of getting old? Dumbledore shook his head slightly, a hint of self-deprecation in his eyes.
Tap-tap.
The silver-haired little loli lowered her head, not uttering a word, her little calfskin boots kicking at the uneven cobblestones between the flagstones of Diagon Alley, letting the old wizard lead her towards Ollivanders Wand Shop, clearly still sulking.
Eileen actually knew that Dumbledore, with his verbose, paternalistic nature, would never sit idly by and watch her turn Diagon Alley into a magical version of a wet market.
But when she saw so many things she had never seen or eaten before—especially when that big white rabbit kept attracting her attention in such a flamboyant manner, as if saying, "Eat me, eat me, eat me!"—what could she do?
Did she not know to gradually disguise her intentions? But she really couldn't control herself!
Now it was all over. Besides the 【Magical Menagerie】 just now, the only remaining pet shop in Diagon Alley was 【Eeylops Owl Emporium】 not far away, where Harry Potter bought his snowy owl named Hedwig.
Eileen wouldn't be so naive as to imagine that Dumbledore, knowing the truth about the missing owl incidents at Hogwarts, would still take her to an owl shop.
But understanding or not, being pulled out of stores twice in a row by Dumbledore still made Eileen quite unhappy. She had decided that she wouldn't say a word to Dumbledore from now on.
Just as the girl was secretly pouting, she suddenly felt Dumbledore beside her stop, and the old wizard's gentle voice reached her ears.
"Wait for me for a moment. Eileen, just stand here and don't wander around."
Dumbledore let go of her hand, rubbed the silver-haired little loli's soft hair, squatted down, looked into her eyes, and earnestly instructed.
Eileen raised her head and glanced at the sign of the shop next to her, 【Eeylops Owl Emporium】.
Looking past the door, it seemed that in order to match the nocturnal habits of owls, the inside of the store was dark. One could only vaguely imagine the scene of the shop being filled with owls through the rustling of flapping wings and the jewel-like bright eyes shining in the darkness.
Watching Dumbledore's figure disappear into the dark 【Eeylops Owl Emporium】, Eileen pouted, becoming even more unhappy. In her opinion, the annoying headmaster was probably going to instruct the store staff, just like before, not to sell her any owls or anything like that.
However, this emotion didn't last long—Dumbledore stuffed a large birdcage into Eileen's hands.
"Th-this… Professor, you wouldn't want to say this is for me, would you?"
Eileen stammered, holding the cage in a flustered manner, her face full of surprise.
You know, she was a cold-blooded orphaned butcher with dozens of Highland plump chickens' lives on her hands.
Dumbledore pointed to the beautiful dark brown bird inside the cage, and said with a smile.
"I know it may be a bit surprising. However, after thinking about it, I decided to give you an owl. Children all like owls. It can deliver letters and packages for you."
In the cage, the dark brown owl was sleeping soundly with its head buried under its wings, not aware of any danger.
Dumbledore paused, his azure eyes gently gazing at Eileen, and continued softly.
"According to the wizard at the shop, this is a rather strange Brown Owl. Because its cry and appearance are different from other owls, it hasn't been very happy. But I think you should be able to take good care of it."
"Not the same?"
Eileen looked at the sleeping little plump chicken in the birdcage with confusion. Looking closely, it did look somewhat different from most of the Highland plump chickens she had seen before.
Compared to most of its kind, it was obviously on the smaller side, only slightly larger than a fat pigeon. Unlike most owls with uniform colors, this round-faced little plump chicken looked particularly beautiful.
A white shoulder strap extended from the back of its neck to the position of its scapula. The edges of the plumage were inlaid with white, and the wings and tail had light brown stripes. The color of the feathers on its body was a gradient of dark brown-yellow-red.
"Speaking of which, it is indeed very beautiful… and it looks very dumb and fleshy."
Eileen curiously stretched out her finger, gently poked the Highland plump chicken that was still immersed in its dream through the iron cage, and licked her lips.
Goo haha! Goo haha!
The dark brown bird suddenly woke up, flapping its wings, and fell off the horizontal bar in the middle of the cage in a panic, making a series of strange calls, as if it was a dog's bark, or a burst of hysterical laughter from afar.
The plump, round bird face looked very comical, the facial discs behind and below the large eyes were white, then gradually turned gray, with brown stripes moving towards the center.
"Wait, Professor Dumbledore, what kind of species did you say it was again?"
Hearing the laughter-like cooing sound from the cage, Eileen suddenly raised her head and asked Dumbledore.
"A Brown Owl, but its cry and appearance are a bit strange, is there anything wrong?"
Dumbledore looked at Eileen with confusion, not knowing why the girl's emotions suddenly became agitated.
"No, this is not a Brown Owl. It doesn't even belong to any species in the Strigidae family."
Eileen looked at the little plump chicken huddled in the corner of the cage again, the one that hadn't been named yet, and slowly shook her head.
"This is a Laughing Owl of the Sceloglaux family, also known as hkau or white-faced owl. A species that has already been declared extinct in the Muggle world. I didn't expect it to still exist in the magical world."
Although she hadn't anticipated this situation before, this didn't stop Dumbledore from drawing a conclusion from the information given by the silver-haired little loli.
Dumbledore raised his eyebrows, a thoughtful expression flashed across his face, and said meaningfully.
"So, it might be the last one in the world? But I believe you, Eileen, will be able to feed it well."
Eh? The silver-haired little loli blinked her eyes.
The last one in the world, eating it would be equivalent to extincting a species?!
Eileen instantly realized what kind of hot potato she had taken over. An owl that can't be eaten, is that still a Highland plump chicken?!
"Wait, Professor Dumbledore, I don't want to raise a pet, let's return it to the store. Or you can give it to Mr. Newt Scamander!"
Coming to her senses, Eileen picked up the cage and anxiously wanted to put it back into Dumbledore's hands. Although she was a foodie, she only ate food that could be regenerated and farmed. She wasn't so depraved as to eat a creature that would become extinct if eaten.
"Of course... not!"
Looking at the little loli with a tangled expression, Dumbledore shook his head happily and refused without hesitation.
The reason for his happiness was not only seeing Eileen deflated, but more importantly, he had discovered some particularly precious qualities in this little girl.
After a pause, Dumbledore continued in a brisk tone.
"Besides, I promised to buy you a pet. I won't do something that goes back on my word. As for Mr. Newt Scamander, he has started his world tour again, and I can't find him anywhere for the time being, so you can take care of it for now."
"Let's go, now only Ollivanders Wand Shop is left."
Goo haha~ Goo haha~
Seeming to feel a lot safer all of a sudden, the little owl in the cage also let out an excited cry at the right time.
"Shut up! If you make me angry, I'll eat you into extinction!"
The half-Veela ground her teeth and glared fiercely at the little guy in the cage.
Goo~QAQ~

(Eileen Kaslana, who can't eat her pet, is waiting pitifully for everyone's feeding: requesting recommendation tickets, requesting recommendation tickets, requesting recommendation tickets~)
(ps: As for the pet's name, let's call it Vika, taken from the transliteration of hkau.)
(I didn't choose a very cool magical creature. First, school rules don't allow it, at least Dumbledore won't let it pass. Second, I don't want to magically modify too many strange settings. Third, raising a Highland little plump chicken that you want to eat but can't seems very loving.)
